July / August 2008       VOLUME 7, NUMBER 4

DANCE CLUB LABOR IS A LABOR OF LOVE;

THOSE WHO SEEK SILVER AND GOLD WILL BE DISAPPOINTED;

FOR THE WAGES OF A VOLUNTEER ARE PAID IN JOY, FRIENDSHIP, AND ACCOMPLISHMENT.

LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Hello Spa City Dancers,

Well, here we are practically in the middle of summer and I hope that each of you is having a good one.  Sometime the lake events keep some of our dancers from coming off the lake in time to dance, but we do hope that you can make it to almost all of the dances we have scheduled and also the special events.  Rumors are that there is life out there other than dancing, but hard to imagine it, right?  And, we do miss you when you are not present at our dances.  Speaking of missing dancers, I just have to mention how much we miss Jim Stanton on the dance floor, but he attends anyway and we wish him a very speedy recovery.

You may think it is too early to mention something that is a year away, but your Board of Directors is so excited about hosting our 1st week-end dance, so I just want you to join us in looking forward to a wonderful time of dancing, socializing and just ‘hanging out’ with your friends on May 1st and 2nd, 2009, at the Austin Hotel.  Yes, 2009, but it will be here before we know it.  Each one of you will be needed to help make this a very special and successful event.  You will be hearing ‘Dancin’ In The Park’ mentioned from now until the date arrives, and hopefully for years to come.  Details will follow, as the date gets closer, but just wanted to share in this excitement.

Have a happy and safe summer, and don’t forget how blessed we are just living in this area of Hot Springs with so many opportunities for a wonderful life.

Remember all we want to do is, Dance, Dance, Dance!!!  See you on the dance floor!

 Proud to be your Pres,
 Boppin Brenda

OUT & ABOUT - IN OUR TOWN!  Do you know about Garvan Woodland Gardens?

Garvan Woodland Gardens is an example of The Natural State at its best: a canopy of pines reaching skyward providing protection for delicate flora and fauna, gentle lapping waves that unfold along the 4 ½ miles of wooded shoreline, and rocky inclines that remind us of the surrounding Ouachita Mountains.  The Gardens are a beautifully crafted response to those who may have doubted one determined woman's vision for a world-class botanical garden.
Located at 550 Arkridge Road.

 Below Photo:  June 8th, 2008, at Garvan Woodland Gardens, the “Jazz Brunch” was delightfully entertained by members of our own Spa City Bop and Swing Dance Club.   There were dance exhibitions by couples, then a jam session with some of the Jazz group participating.  We are invited to come back in the fall for another exhibition!  WAY TO GO BOPPERS!

   THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON… LINDA SLUPPICK
Hey!  I’m in the Spotlight.  This is different…the editor writing an article about herself!   I was asked to do this so…Ok, here goes!  I was born in Indiana and have lived in Hot Springs since I was the age of 2.  I have always loved Hot Springs and have not had a reason to move anywhere else.  I married at 18 and was married for 19 years but that ended in divorce.  I have 2 children and 6 grandchildren from the ages of 10 months to 15 years.  I know…quite an age range.

After all the crazy divorce stuff was over, I started getting out and learning about who Linda was and what she could do.  Some friends invited me to go to Dad’s Place.  I never danced when I was growing up or during my married years so dancing was all new to me.  I heard the great music and watched people dancing and having so much fun.  I was so envious and wished I knew how to dance.  I watched and soon got brave enough to try it myself.  I was so shy and nervous about trying to dance.   Back then there was a lot of free style dancing so that helped with getting started with dancing and getting away from the thought that everybody was watching me.  Imagine that…why in the world anyone would be watching me anyway.  Funny about how our minds play tricks on us!

I got to know some of the other people at Dad’s so there were always people there that I knew.  It got to be when the sun went down, a group of people (including me) would come out and had a nice place to go and have companionship and all had the love of dancing.  I was very fortunate meeting some people and when we danced, we felt the same rhythm of the music and that made it easier to learn. Some of those people are in our dance club to this date; Gary Dickinson, Ron Galloway and Ernie Pearson are to name a few.  That was how I learned to dance…just getting out there and the more I danced, the more I loved it and the more I danced, the better I got!   If I could dance, I encourage anyone who does not think they can to at try.  You never know until you actually get out there and try.  Dancing is so much fun and such great exercise!
I can remember a time when Gary Dickinson taught dance lessons at Dad’s and had to go out of town for a month.  He asked me to take over teaching lessons while he was gone.  Boy was I nervous!  ME!  Teach others to dance!  I never thought I could do anything like that.  I got past being nervous after a while and was able to teach others the basic steps in the waltz, the two-step, the three-step, the “Electric Slide” and the “Achy Breaky Heart” line dance.  We had so much fun!
Being a member of the Spa City Bop & Swing Dance Club from the beginning has been a great experience for me.  The 1st dance lessons at the Austin, I had the opportunity to assist Bill, when needed, to demonstrate dance steps until my job started taking me out of town during the week.  I have so many great memories to look back on

I have been Editor of the Spa Connection for a little over 2 years.  The friendships I made through the years are wonderful to say the least.  Members of our Dance Club are such a special group of people.  They are people who care and have been there for me during different happenings in my life as well as others.  And…they have something in common…they all love to dance!

See you soon!
